Pilates for Spine Health Pilates for Spinal Health This term we will be thinking about how Pilates can help us improve our back health. Joesph Pilates says that you are as young as your spine is flexible. As physiotherapists we think that there is a fair amount of truth in that! Our spines are an incredible column of 33 bones, 364 joints and 23 discs. It is a strong, flexible structure. It supports our body, protects our neural system and allows us to move. The neuromusculoskeletal system around our spines is resilient and strong. However, back pain is really common. [...]

Pilates for Upper Limb Health

2025-09-12T16:28:10+01:00

Pilates isn't just about our spines. Just like our spines our upper body needs to have the right balance of mobility and strength to function well and be pain-free. Pilates can be an excellent part of this programme helping us to strengthen, mobilise, stretch and refine our neuromuscular control and co-ordination. This September, as well as our usual core strength and stretching programmes, we will look at how Pilates can help keep our shoulders and arms healthy.

What is core stability? How does Pilates help?

2025-09-12T16:45:24+01:00

What are core muscles? Core muscles are a group of muscles acting as stabilisers. To move, your body needs a stable base as a foundation. Think of the roots of a great oak tree, to reach out its branches it needs a strong foundation. In our bodies this strong foundation is provided partly by core muscles. Each time we move our limbs away from our body, bend, twist or lift, our trunk muscles need to work together to control and power the movement. Good core stability allows you to move freely. Poor core stability is linked to pain and dysfunction. When [...]

Pilates and Strength. Will Pilates make me stronger?

2025-09-12T14:21:08+01:00

Will Pilates help me to get stronger? Yes! And this term we will focus on all the ways Pilates can! When physiotherapists talk about strength they are talking about the ability of a muscle to generate force along it's length. Being strong incorporates power, tone and endurance. Strength also requires other elements of musculoskeletal fitness including flexibility. Physiotherapists use something called 'muscle grading' to establish how strong a muscle is. But, just like fitness, being strong can be relative. We need to be strong enough to balance our bodies and do the tasks we need to. For some that might [...]
