Private Pilates & Physiotherapy: Frequently Asked Questions

I am new to exercise – can I do Pilates?2024-12-23T07:26:56+00:00

Certainly. Pilates is a low-impact, gentle but effective strengthening and stretching programme. You do not have to have an certain level of fitness to start. Our clinical team will meet you where you are and help you gently progress at the pace that is right for you.

Can I attend just one class?2024-12-30T08:02:31+00:00

No, you cannot attend just one class. Our classes are booked as part of a progressive course of 6-8 sessions. Each week our course gently progresses so that you get fitter, stronger and more flexible week by week.

If you would like to try a class why not book a pre-class introduction. See more here.

      What if I miss a class?2024-12-30T08:02:45+00:00

Don’t worry if you need to miss a class, your instructor will continue to work with you when you are back. Our small class sizes mean we can support our clients 1:1.

We also offer online catch up sessions. We have live stream classes on Wednesdays at 6.30pm and pre-recorded classes by your physios each term. Both of these can be accessed on the members area. It is free as part of your programme membership.

We cannot carry missed sessions over into the next programme or offer refunds for any missed classes.

New clients are welcome to join us at the start of each course block (normally in week 1 or 2) but sometimes we can accommodate new clients in a course in progress. Contact us, we would love to help.

If you are looking to join a mixed ability class then we highly recommend booking in a pre-class introduction for some 1:1 time with your class physio before the course starts. You can book these in advance of joining your course. See more here.

      What does physiotherapy involve?2022-05-19T20:05:58+01:00

      Before your session

Before we meet you we will ask you a little about your problem to match you with the right physiotherapist.

We will then ask you to complete a pre-session questionnaire. This includes questions about any COVID-19 symptoms to ensure that our clinics stay COVID secure. Your physiotherapist uses the clinical information in this form to help guide their assessment of you.

      Physiotherapy Assessment:

At your initial appointment your physiotherapist will ask you some questions about you, your life style, your health and your problem. This is important in helping them make a diagnosis and guiding your treatment programme.

With your consent, your physiotherapist will then perform an ‘objective assessment’. This involves them looking at the body part in question, how you move and doing some specific tests. Your physiotherapist will explain each part of the process to you and explain what they are finding as they go.

Depending on the problem area your physiotherapist may ask you to remove some clothing for this part of the session. Please dress with this in mind. Leggings, shorts and a vest or t-shirt can all be good choices depending on the body parts your physiotherapist will be assessing.

After the assessment your physiotherapist will explain their findings to you and work with you to develop a treatment programme

      Physiotherapy Treatment

Your physiotherapist will discuss all appropriate treatment options with you. These may include manual therapy, exercise therapy and specialist treatment techniques such as acupuncture or taping.

They will also explain how you can help ease the problem in your day to day life.

Physiotherapy treatment is often graded. Your physiotherapist will talk to you about long term management of your problem and may suggest follow up appointments to help you with this.

      Why choose our physiotherapists?2022-05-19T19:33:34+01:00

      Our physiotherapists are clinical experts:

Most importantly, our physiotherapists have a wealth of skills, knowledge and experience. Between us, our team have over 100yrs of clinical experience, so we are sure to have the skills and knowledge you need.

We will match you with the physiotherapist best suited to your clinical condition and your availability.  You can find out more about our physiotherapists qualifications, skills and experience here.

      We make physiotherapy accessible:

Our pop-up nature means that where appropriate we will bring our physiotherapy clinic to you. We can offer home or office appointments depending on your clinical need.

You do not need a referral from you GP to access our services. Just contact us.

      We put people before profit:

Despite our clinical experience we do all we can to keep appointments as affordable as possible. We believe that cost should never be a barrier to health and wellbeing.

How do I book an appointment?2022-05-19T19:16:44+01:00

Contact us and tell us a little about your problem. We will then match you with the right specialist physiotherapist and look for an appointment at a time and place to suit you.

You don’t need to be referred by your GP to see us.

      Can Pilates help injury prevention?2024-12-30T08:04:14+00:00

Yes. Pilates compliments faster paced sports and exercise programmes well. Running for example is good for cardiovascular fitness but can leave you feeling tight and with muscle imbalances. Pilates helps you build core strength, flexibility and address muscle imbalances. This can help you prevent injury and improve your performance.

Best of all, practicing physio led Pilates helps you to understand your body. When you are your own movement expert you can carry this with you into all your activities.

Do I need any special equipment?2024-12-30T08:06:20+00:00

No, all you need to start is a mat. Pilates uses your own body to provide the resistance and load. You can work at all levels without any special equipment at all.

Once you get going you might find it useful to purchase some small bits of equipment to add variety and help develop more advanced techniques. Your instructor can help you with this. We might suggest spiky balls, resistance bands, or a strap for stretching.
